I teach at / own a very ballet-focused studio. Will the Little Dancer Curriculum prepare my students for a more rigorous curriculum later on?
All of our curriculums are rooted in the most recent child development theory and dance science. They provide students with a strong foundation for any form of dance they may choose in the future through fundamentals, correct technique, and progressions that build from one level to the next. We’ve had studios use our curriculum to lead into or supplement their classes that follow the ABT National Training Curriculum, Cecchetti Method, Royal Academy of Dance, and ISTD.
I teach at / own a recreational studio. Is this curriculum right for me?
The beauty our Little Dancer Curriculum is, while it does teach a strong technical foundation of ballet and other forms of dance, it does so through fun, imagination, and creativity. We've had teachers use and love Little Dancer at YMCAs, rec centers, and recreational studios as well. All of our toddler, preschool, and early elementary lesson plans (ages 1.5 to 7) include a theme focus that helps keep your students engaged in class. When they come to dance class, they get to go on a new adventure—making the technique part really fun for them.
Your age groups don’t quite match with how our classes are divided at my studio. What do you recommend?
First, take a look at the lesson plans of the age groups that overlap with what you teach. If you have a 4 to 6 year old class, for example, take a look at our 3 to 5 year old lessons and our 5 to 7 year old lessons. Is there one that looks more aligned with what you’ve been teaching? If so, use that one. You can also mix and match. Maybe your 4 to 6 year olds are ready for the 5 to 7 year old centre barre, but still really enjoy obstacle courses in our 3 to 5 year old age group. All of our younger classes are structured in a similar order, so it’s easy to create your own lesson plan pulling from the different levels. You could use the traveling exercises from our 5 to 7 year old age group and the free dance from our 3 to 5 year old age group.
